All social security pension beneficiaries who were sanctioned pensions by Thalayazham Grama Panchayat on or before December 31, 2025, are required to complete Mustering through an Akshaya Centre on or before September 30, 2026.
Kariyar Spillway

Kariyar Spillway is an important water-control system constructed across the Kariyar, connecting Kothavara in Thalayazham Grama Panchayat, located in Vaikom Taluk of Kottayam District, with Kottachira in the neighbouring T. V. Puram Grama Panchayat.

The major features and significance of the spillway are as follows:

  • Improved Connectivity: With the construction of the Kariyar Spillway and the bridge associated with it, the distance between Thalayazham and T. V. Puram Panchayats has been significantly reduced. It has also improved travel connectivity towards Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Cherthala.
  • Agricultural Requirements: The spillway was primarily constructed to protect agricultural fields in the region and to prevent the intrusion of saline water. The opening and closing of its shutters are regulated in coordination with the functioning of the Thannermukkom Bund.
  • Environmental and Inland Waterway Issues: Following the construction of the spillway, the natural flow of water in the Kariyar can sometimes be obstructed. The accumulation of invasive aquatic weeds such as African Payal (water hyacinth) and other waste materials can adversely affect inland water transportation and fish resources.
  • Cleaning and Maintenance Activities: Regular interventions are undertaken under the leadership of elected representatives and the District Collector to remove waste and aquatic weeds from the Kariyar Spillway area and to ensure smooth water flow.

Kariyar Spillway plays an important role in agricultural protection, water management, transportation, and regional connectivity, making it a significant landmark of Thalayazham and the surrounding areas.
